CMC Arthritis - Overview
Function of the CMC Joint
The Carpometalcarpal (CMC) Joint is located at the base of the thumb between the carpal bones and the metacarpal bones. As a saddle joint, it allows for the thumb to move freely in many directions allowing you to perform tasks such as opening a jar or pinching an object.
What is CMC Arthritis?
The bones that make up the CMC joint are covered in cartilage which allows for smooth gliding during movement in a healthy joint. With overuse, there is a wearing on the cartilage which increases friction and damages the joint. Ostoarthritis is the result of this overuse as the joint space narrows and more inflammation occurs as a result.
Symptoms of CMC Arthritis:
- Pain and tenderness at the base of the thumb
- Aching after longterm use
- Enlarged appearance of the CMC joint
- Reduction in strength of the joint
- Increase in pain while grasping (such as opening a jar) or pinching (turning a key)
Did you know?
Women are more likely to present with CMC arthritis compared to men. CMC arthritis is the second most common location for arthritis in the hand.
Bracing and Support for CMC Arthritis
Push Ortho Thumb Brace CMC:
As one of our main sellers over the years, the Push Ortho Thumb Brace CMC is the original of it's kind. This brace will stabilize the CMC joint while still allowing you to move the thumb as you normally would. It comes with a one year warranty and can be used in water.
Quick Check: Do you also have arthritis in the neighbouring Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint as well?
If you have arthritis in both the CMC and MCP (where the thumb meets the palm of the hand), you may find more relief with immobilization of the two joints. The Manutec Breathable Thumb is our most popular option for CMC/MCP Joint Arthritis. Please be sure to connect with your physiotherapist for hand exercises to maintain the strength in your hand.
Reminder: Don't forget to consult your physiotherapist or healthcare practitioner for more information on how to manage pain associated with CMC and/or MCP arthritis.
